How Knightsbridge Property Services Turned Carbon Accountability into a Competitive Advantage

Industry: Construction and Property Services

Location: South of England

NCZ Certification: Gold

Background: Building Responsibly in a Changing Industry

Knightsbridge Property Services (KPS) is an SME contractor operating across the South of England. The company provides comprehensive building, mechanical, and electrical services to sectors including education, government, security, and infrastructure.

For years, KPS has delivered exceptional technical results, but as Managing Director Will McLaughlin explains, the business landscape was changing. “In the past, it was about having the most competitive price,” he says. “Now, clients are asking: what else can you bring to the table in terms of added value, social responsibility, and sustainability?”

That shift in market expectation prompted KPS to look closely at their environmental impact and take measurable steps to manage it. “We wanted to make sure we were doing our part,” Will notes, “not just for compliance, but because it’s the right thing to do.”

The Challenge: Understanding Carbon as an SME

For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), carbon management often feels daunting. Unlike large corporations with dedicated sustainability teams, SMEs must balance tight budgets and limited resources while staying competitive.

“Being an SME, carbon management wasn’t high on our agenda initially,” Will admits. “But over the past three years, it’s become clear that you can’t just focus on cost, you also have to show how you’re contributing to sustainability.”

Before working with NCZ, Knightsbridge had not used any formal carbon management solution. “We looked around the market,” says Will, “but we hadn’t found anything that fit our size or sector.”

They needed a partner who could guide them through the carbon accounting process, make sense of the data, and translate it into real business impact, without unnecessary complexity or jargon.

The Solution: Partnering with NCZ

Having previously worked with Alan Stenson and Krys Stanton, Will was already familiar with NCZ’s credibility and approach. That trust, combined with NCZ’s proven expertise in carbon accounting and SME-friendly certification, made the decision straightforward.

KPS began with NCZ’s carbon accounting service, designed to accurately measure Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and establish a verified baseline, the foundation for any credible decarbonisation plan.

Their journey started with the NCZ Gold Certification, which reflects a verified commitment to reduction and credible carbon management practices aligned with international standards such as ISO 14064.

The Process: Clarity, Collaboration, and Confidence

The onboarding process was led by NCZ’s Philippa and the technical team. Will recalls the first data cycle being an educational experience:

“The first year was definitely the steepest learning curve. Making sure the data aligned with all the right subcategories was challenging, but Philippa was brilliant. Once we got through the first cycle, everything became smoother.”

KPS also valued how inclusive the process was. Staff across departments were engaged to provide input, which created a strong sense of shared ownership. “Our team really embraced it,” Will shares. “They could see that we were tracking our footprint seriously, not just paying lip service.”

Insights and Impact: Seeing the Bigger Picture

Through NCZ’s carbon accounting, KPS discovered new insights into how everyday business operations — travel, fleet management, and logistics — contributed to their footprint.

“It really opened our eyes,” Will explains. “We started questioning things like: does everyone need to travel to the office every day? Could we downsize vehicles or move toward hybrids?”

These insights have since shaped strategic decisions, including KPS’s vehicle strategy and remote work policies. Rather than jumping straight into full electrification, the company adopted a phased approach: prioritising achievable, incremental changes that build momentum toward their long-term goal of net zero.

Results: From Compliance to Competitive Advantage

Since partnering with NCZ, KPS has not only improved its sustainability performance but also discovered tangible business benefits.

  1. Improved Reporting and Transparency
  2.  “Our reporting is much clearer now,” Will says. “We share our NCZ report with tenders and contract submissions, and that’s a differentiator. Many of our competitors can’t do that yet.”
  1. Winning More Work

The construction sector is increasingly factoring carbon credibility into tender decisions. “Clients are definitely taking notice,” Will adds. “Being able to provide verified data and certification gives us an advantage. It’s no longer just a box-ticking exercise, it’s a differentiator.”

  1. Stakeholder Confidence

Both clients and employees have responded positively. “Our team takes pride in it, and clients appreciate that we’re proactive rather than reactive,” Will says. “It builds trust.”

  1. Exploring Carbon-Neutral Projects

KPS has started using NCZ’s carbon credits framework to offer clients carbon-neutral project options. “We’ve proposed projects that could be fully carbon neutral, and clients love it,” Will says. “It’s not something they’re hearing from other SMEs.”

Lessons Learned: A Roadmap for Realistic Progress

Will is quick to emphasise that sustainability for SMEs is a journey, not a switch.

“For a smaller business, you need a roadmap. There are some quick wins, but others take time and planning. You don’t have to go electric overnight, but you do need a plan.”

That balance of ambition and realism has defined KPS’s success. They’ve moved from entry-level certification to NCZ Gold within three years, a progression that reflects both commitment and consistency.

“It’s definitely influenced how we plan for the future,” Will explains. “The data we get from NCZ helps us make better decisions, not just for compliance but for long-term efficiency.”

Looking Ahead: From Gold to Platinum

Having achieved Gold Certification, KPS is now preparing to aim for NCZ Platinum, which requires deeper data tracking and verified reductions across all scopes. “It’s more demanding, but it gives us more feedback,” Will says. “The more we put in, the more we get out.”

The company is also exploring more advanced sustainability initiatives — from responsible procurement to on-site energy management — while continuing to refine its fleet and travel policies.

“We’ve gone from no formal sustainability programme to integrating it into how we operate day-to-day,” Will says. “And NCZ has been a big part of that.”

Why It Matters: Sustainability as Strategy

For Knightsbridge, sustainability isn’t just about environmental stewardship; it’s now a core part of their growth strategy.

“It’s about reputation, relationships, and readiness,” Will explains. “Our NCZ certification has helped us open doors. Clients see the certificate, the verified data, and the track record. It tells them we’re serious.”

As sustainability reporting and carbon reduction become mandatory across the UK and EU, companies like Knightsbridge are proving that SMEs can lead the charge, not by doing everything at once, but by taking consistent, credible steps guided by the right partners.

Conclusion: The NCZ Difference

Knightsbridge Property Services’ journey shows how credible carbon accounting and certification can transform not just operations, but business outcomes.
