Birkin engaged NCZ as they needed to establish a credible journey to net zero, understand where emissions originate from and where costs and environmental impact can be reduced. They also needed to communicate the specific impact of their on-site operations in a client specific manner in order to add value and assist with the management of their scope 3 supply-chain emissions.

Phase 2 Initial assessment and solutions (quick wins)
Using the reported baseline of emissions, we were able to immediately assess and recommend solutions that would significantly reduce carbon emissions and costs, including:
- Engaging with the supply-chain to understand and/ or encourage them to calculate their own carbon footprint, to enable more accurate calculation in the future based on an ‘emission by revenue factor’ per supplier.
- Continuing the replacement of petrol and diesel company vehicles towards hybrid and electric as their leases expire.
- Encouraging greater use of public transport, where this is an option, and/or undertake meetings through virtual platforms where site meetings are not necessary.

Understanding the emissions associated with Birkin’s cleaning services has now made it possible to report on the impact of all on-site activities in a client specific manner. This enables Birkin to communicate on the source of emissions, the results of any reductions achieved and the balancing of the remaining footprint to ensure a carbon neutral service offering to the client. Managing these service-related emissions ensures Birkin are providing value and insight by identifying the sources, and supporting the overall reduction of the emissions of its client base. Next step: NCZ Platinum Certification Establishing a full supply-chain compliance programme will enable Birkin to understand, report on and ultimately influence the reduction of emissions arising from its suppliers’ activities. This will also enable Birkin to demonstrate a proactive approach and continual improvement when managing an area that has traditionally been considered as outside of control.
