How can you help preserve biodiversity at work and home?
🪴 Biodiversity isn’t just a countryside concern; it starts at your front door. Whether you’re working from home or running a company, there’s plenty we can do to support the ecosystems we’re all part of.
Here are a few ways to help preserve biodiversity, simply and impactfully:
🌱 At Work:
Make Space for Nature: Even small patches of green around your workplace can become microhabitats. Think planter boxes with pollinator-friendly plants, or leaving a corner of lawn uncut.
Rethink Grounds Maintenance: Swapping pesticides and herbicides for organic alternatives helps protect soil health and local insects. If you’re outsourcing landscaping, check their environmental practices.
Include Biodiversity in Your Carbon Strategy:
Choose suppliers who respect biodiversity in their operations, from packaging to farming. If you’re sourcing coffee, paper, or even uniforms, ask how they’re produced.
Green Your Procurement: Carbon and biodiversity go hand in hand. Nature-based solutions that protect ecosystems (like reforestation and wetland restoration) should be part of your emissions reduction toolkit.

Plant Native:
Your garden or balcony can be a sanctuary. Native plants attract native species, and they’re often lower maintenance, too.
Go Organic Where You Can:
Switching to eco-friendly cleaning products and avoiding harsh chemicals in the garden can help protect local waterways and soil life.
Let Wild Be Wild:
That messy corner of your yard? It might be the perfect shelter for hedgehogs, frogs, or bees. Sometimes, doing less is more.
Talk About It:
Sparking conversations at home, with neighbours, or at work helps normalise care for the natural world and builds community action.
This month, we put the spotlight on our Content and Marketing Strategist, Iris Agcaoili.
With her extensive experience in theatre, corporate events, project management, and copywriting, Iris excels at conceptualising digital content and planning marketing strategies, making her the creative puzzle piece that fits perfectly in the NCZ team.
Q. What’s your claim to fame?
A. I was the spelling bee champ in school, and I was also the theatre kid. Now, I am the travel nerd and itinerary planner in my friend group, and my girls also come to me for the perfect perfume recommendation and love life advice (despite being single myself). 😁
Q. If you had the opportunity to know the future, would you want to know?
A. I would not be able to go to bed if I knew what tomorrow looks like. A huge part of the fun of living is that you get to change and design the future.
Q. What’s your go-to karaoke song?
A. I grew up listening to the Riot grrrl music of the ’90s, so it’s a toss-up between What’s Up by 4 Non-Blondes and You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette. 🎤
Q. What’s your favourite childhood memory?
A. Visiting my grandmother in the province during summer break and bathing in the river with my cousins and my uncles’ carabaos! 🐃
Q. Tea or coffee?
A. Tea, especially a hot cup of chai, never fails to pick me up!
